UK iPod prices as expected
As expected the new line of iPod’s from Apple do not stay fair to the US prices.
If you buy an iPod touch in the US it will cost you $299 or £147.87. But if you buy one in the UK it will cost you £199 for the same capacity iPod touch. That price is inclusive of VAT. However, £147 + VAT only comes to £173 so you still pay a further £26 for the same machine. This isn’t only true of Apple. Sony’s Playstation 3 in the UK (starting price) £425. If you buy a PS3 in the US, you would pay less and get a better machine. And I think I speak for us all when I say; all we want, is fair, official currency change prices, with the same level of machine as everybody else for the same price. It really can’t be that difficult. It is time we stood up for ourselves and stopped taking it up the arse from America and Japan. Also, synchronised global releases. No more waiting! That isn’t fair.

Apple unveil their new iPod line in time for Christmas.
Apple unveil their new iPod line in time for Christmas.
Once again Steve Jobbs heads the new Keynote presentation in San Francisco along with Howard Schultz (founder of Starbucks) and KT Tunstall (musician).
So with that in mind, this keynote was a music-orientated presentation. And as you can expect Apple were unveiling plenty of new and exciting gadgets for us gadget sheep to buy use and follow with our hearts and wallets. So, this time was the turn of iTunes and the iPod. Not to long ago Apple stunned the world with the fantastic looking iPhone, so when you have a phone, you want ringtones. The new version of iTunes has ringtone capability, all you do is; first you choose a song from the iTunes store and you make a ringtone of up to 30 seconds from any part of the song that you want and you buy it. The ringtone costs you 79p plus the cost of the song, so, 79p+79p=£1.58 unless you have already bought the song from the iTunes store in which case it only costs you 79p… (In theory. Because as usual, with anything coming from the states you can expect that the official currency exchange rate will not be used. Take the Sony Playstation 3 for example.)
Steve also took the time show the world their new line of award winning iPods.
The “iPod Shuffle” gets a price drop.
The “iPod Nano” gets a face lift, a bigger 2” screen, cover flow, the ability to watch movies, and it gets wider, to accommodate the new bigger screen. But it also gets thinner.
The “iPod” as it was known, now has a name. The “iPod Classic” gets thinner still, with two choices of hard drive space. 80GB or 160GB. The 160GB model can hold up to 40,000 songs, and it also has all the features of the new Nano.
But that wasn’t all, Steve also announced to the world a whole new generation of iPods. Like the iPhone the new “iPod touch” is a widescreen multi-touch mobile device. Now when I saw “mobile” I don’t mean, Mobile phone, I mean a mobile device as in a device that is very mobile. Very much the star of the show, the brand new iPod touch boasts almost all the features of the iPhone but with out the monthly bill. So at this point, I started thinking, “you know what, my phone is fine, I don’t really need an iPhone, I’ll just get an iPod touch”.
And I thought that for these reasons;
The iPod touch is a full colour widescreen iPod.
It has the following features;
- Multi-touch (you no longer need a click wheel to work this iPod, you just tap on the screen for the application you want to use.)
- Full colour widescreen display
- An 8GB and 16GB hard drive
- Stunning design
- Wi-Fi enabled
- Browse the proper world wide web in Apple’s web browser “Safari”
- Watch movies
- Cover flow
- Browse, store and view your digital/HD photos in a slideshow.
- Access to the brand new iTunes store “iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store”
- Free access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store in Starbucks stores
So, the scene.
You are sitting in a Starbucks with a few mates before you head of the cinema, or something of the like kind. You hear a fantastic new song that you have never heard before, but you don’t know what it is. So, instead of asking the guy on the till, (because chances are, he doesn’t know either) you go to your iPod touch and tap the Starbucks icon. Now, not only can you see the record currently playing, you can also see the last 10 records played in that store. And now you can get a preview of that song, and buy it and download it directly to your iPod so you can listen to it there and then on your iPod, or when your wife is nagging at you for spending too much time in Starbucks with your spanky new iPod Touch and not enough time at home with the kids… for example.
The iPod shuffle starts at $79 (£36.68)
The iPod nano starts at $149 (£73.68)
The iPod classic starts at $249 (£123.14)
The iPod touch starts at $299 (£147.87)
The iPhone starts at $399*(£197.32)
*New lower price, but you still get a monthly bill.
As I said earlier, unless you import one, you will not get any of the above for the stated GBP price. (Also, I strongly advise against importing an iPhone as it will only work on the AT&T network in the USA. The iPod touch however, is probably a different story, you probably could import an iPod touch.)
